Microsoft Entra ID vs. Azure Active Directory (Azure AD): What’s the Difference?

It is not new but a rebranding.   Microsoft renamed Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) to Microsoft Entra ID in mid-2024 as part of a broader identity and access management rebranding. While the core functionality remains the same, the new name reflects Microsoft’s expanded focus on securing all types of identities (users, devices, and workloads) across hybrid and multicloud environments.

Key Notes for IT Teams:

• • Same Technology: Entra ID is the evolution of Azure AD—no architectural changes or migration is needed.
  • Feature Parity: All Azure AD capabilities (SSO, MFA, conditional access) are unchanged in Entra ID.
  • Why the Change?: Microsoft unified its identity products (e.g., Entra ID, Entra Permissions Management) under the “Entra” brand for clarity.

Please note that when we refer to Entra ID in this guide, we mean the same identity platform formerly called Azure AD.

🔧 Step-by-Step: How to Integrate Cormant-CS with Entra ID

Contact your Azure Administrator for required information and access in setting this up.  For demo or testing purposes, here’s how to configure SSO between Cormant-CS DCIM and Microsoft Entra ID:

1. Register the Application in Entra ID

• • Go to Azure Entra ID Admin Center > Enterprise Applications
  • Click
    

    New Application > “Create Your Own”

  • Name it Cormant-CS DCIM, and select Integrate any other application (non-gallery)

2. Enable SAML-based Single Sign-On

• • Upload or paste Cormant-CS SAML metadata (Entity ID, ACS URL)
  • Set NameID Format to EmailAddress
  • Configure User Attributes as needed (e.g., email, givenname, role)
  • Download the Entra metadata XML and configure it in Cormant-CS Admin

3. Test Login and Assign Users

• • Assign test users/groups to the new app
  • Test login flow via the Cormant-CS SSO URL
  • Ensure role-based access control (RBAC) is respected per Entra group
